كان الطفل يوسف في شهره الثاني، ولا يفعل الكثير بعد: ينام، ويشرب الحليب، ويبكي. وأرادت لينا أن تلعب معه، لكنّ ماما قالت إنّه أصغر من الكرة. فسألت لينا بعد العشاء: «إذن ماذا أعطيه؟»
Baby Yusuf was only two months old, and he couldn't do much yet. He slept, he drank milk, and he cried. Lina wanted to play with him, but Mama said he was too little for football. "Then what can I give him?" Lina asked after dinner.
ففكّرت ماما لحظةً، ثمّ وجدت في الخزانة كرةً صغيرةً من القماش، طريّةً ملوّنة، في داخلها جرس، وقالت: «الأطفال يحبّون ما يستطيعون النظر إليه وإمساكه، فربّما تكون هذه أوّل كرة قدمٍ له، منك.»
Mama thought for a moment. Then she found a little cloth ball in the cupboard, soft and colourful, with a bell inside. "Babies love things they can look at and hold," she said. "Maybe this could be his very first football. From you."
فأخذت لينا الكرة إلى يوسف المستلقي على بساط اللعب، ودحرجتها ببطءٍ أمام وجهه فرنّ الجرس، فتبعها يوسف بعينيه، ثمّ حرّك ساقيه الصغيرتين كأنّه يريد أن يلحقها. فقالت لينا: «إنّه يركل! إنّه لاعب كرة!»
Lina took the ball to Yusuf, who was lying on his play mat. She rolled it slowly past his face, and it jingled. Yusuf followed it with his eyes. Then he kicked his little legs, as if he wanted to chase it. "He's kicking!" said Lina. "He's a footballer!"
ووقت النوم وضعت ماما الكرة الصغيرة في سرير يوسف، ودثّرت لينا وقالت: «حين يكبر تستطيعين أن تعلّميه كلّ شيء، لكنّك الليلة علّمتِه أنّ أخته الكبيرة تلعب معه.» فابتسمت لينا ناعسةً وأغمضت عينيها. النهاية.
At bedtime, Mama put the little ball in Yusuf's cot and tucked Lina into bed. "When he's bigger, you can teach him everything," she said. "But tonight you taught him that his big sister plays with him." Lina smiled sleepily and closed her eyes. The end.
