كانت لينا تحبّ الحضانة في الغالب، لكن في منتصف اليوم بعد وقت الوجبة تبدأ دائماً تشتاق إلى البيت، وإلى ماما وبابا. فقالت وقت النوم: «ليتني أستطيع أن آخذكما معي.» ففكّرت ماما لحظة، ثمّ ذهبت إلى درجها وأخرجت جوربين مخطّطين.
Lina liked nursery, mostly. But in the middle of the day, after snack time, she always started to miss home, and Mama, and Baba. At bedtime she said, "I wish I could take you with me." Mama thought for a moment. Then she went to her drawer and pulled out a pair of stripy socks.
كانا جوربي الكرة الخاصّين بلينا، بألوان فريق بابا الذي تشجّعه العائلة كلّها. قالت ماما: «حين يلعب اللاعبون بعيداً عن ملعبهم يلبسون ألوان فريقهم ليتذكّروا من يشجّعهم. غداً تستطيعين أن تلبسيهما تحت سروالك.»
They were Lina's football socks, in the colours of Baba's team, the one the whole family cheered for. "When footballers play away from home," said Mama, "they wear their team colours, so they remember who's cheering for them. Tomorrow, you can wear these under your trousers."
«وإن اشتقتِ إلينا فحرّكي أصابع قدميك فيهما، فذلك فريقك يقول: نحن هنا. ووقت العودة سأكون عند الباب أهتف كأنّها نهاية مباراة.» فضحكت لينا، وتدرّبت على تحريك أصابع قدميها.
"And if you miss us," she said, "wiggle your toes inside them. That's your team saying, 'We're here.' And at home time, I'll be at the gate cheering, like it's the end of a match." Lina giggled, and practised wiggling her toes.
ووضعت ماما الجوربين على الكرسيّ جاهزين للغد، ودثّرتها وقالت: «تصبحين على خير يا نجمة الفريق.» فحرّكت لينا أصابع قدميها مرّةً أخيرةً تحت اللحاف، تشعر بالفريق كلّه قريباً، ونامت. النهاية.
Mama put the socks on the chair, ready for tomorrow, and tucked her in. "Goodnight, star player," she said. Lina wiggled her toes one last time under the duvet, feeling the whole team close by, and fell asleep. The end.
