جاء سامي في زيارة، وبعد العشاء أخذهما بابا إلى الحديقة مع كرة مَجْد. لكنّ مَجْد لم يرد أن يشارك، فظلّ يراوغ بالكرة وحده، وكلّما اقترب سامي استدار بعيداً، حتّى يئس سامي وجلس على العتبة.
Cousin Sami came to visit, and after dinner Baba took them both into the garden with Majd's football. But Majd didn't want to share. He dribbled the ball round and round on his own, and every time Sami came close, he turned away. Soon Sami gave up and sat on the step.
وظلّ مَجْد يراوغ، لكنّ الأمر لم يكن ممتعاً كما ظنّ؛ لا أحد يمرّر إليه، ولا أحد يسجّل عليه. فاتّكأ بابا على السور وسأل: «أتعرف ماذا يفعل لاعبو الكرة؟ يمرّرون. لا أحد يفوز بمباراةٍ وحده.»
Majd kept dribbling. But it wasn't as much fun as he thought. There was nobody to pass to, and nobody to score against. Baba leaned on the fence. "You know what football players do?" he asked. "They pass. Nobody wins a match on their own."
فتوقّف مَجْد، ثمّ ركل الكرة بلطفٍ إلى سامي، فقفز وردّها. وصنع بابا مرمىً من أصيصين، فتناوبا على التسديد والصدّ حتّى صارا يضحكان أكثر من أن يركضا.
Majd stopped. Then he kicked the ball gently to Sami, who jumped up and kicked it back. Baba made a goal with two flowerpots, and they took turns shooting and saving until they were both laughing too hard to run.
وحين عاد سامي إلى بيته حضّرت ماما حمّام مَجْد ودثّرته وسألت: «هل استمتعت؟» فقال مَجْد: «كثيراً جدّاً، بعد أن بدأت أمرّر.» ثمّ تثاءب ونام. النهاية.
When Sami went home, Mama ran Majd's bath and tucked him into bed. "Did you have fun?" she asked. "The most fun," said Majd, "once I started passing." He yawned, and fell asleep. The end.
