Everyone in Lina's football group seemed to be able to do keepy-uppies except her. Yusuf next door could do fifteen. Even cousin Sami could do eight. Lina's record was one, and that was only because the ball had bounced off her knee by accident. That evening, after another hopeless session in the garden, she came in and threw the ball into the corner of the hall. "I'm rubbish," she told Baba. "I've practised for ages and I'm not getting any better." "How long is ages?" asked Baba. Lina thought. "This week. Three times."
Baba tried hard not to smile. "Do you know how long I practised before I could do twenty?" he asked. "A whole summer. Every evening. And I remember crying about it, just like you." He took the ball from the corner. "The trick isn't trying harder. It's making it smaller. Forget twenty. Tonight, you're only trying to get one clean touch with your foot and catch it. That's the whole game." Lina sighed, but followed him out into the garden. The light was nearly gone, so Baba switched on the outside lamp.
Drop, tap, catch. Drop, tap, catch. Most of the taps went wrong at first, sideways, or too high, or off her shin. But Baba made her count only the good ones, and after a while there were more good ones than bad. Then Baba said, "Now try two taps, then catch." It took twenty-three goes. But on the twenty-fourth, the ball went up, came down, went up again, and landed in Lina's hands. Two. She stared at Baba, and he stared back. Then they both cheered so loudly that Mama opened the kitchen window to see what had happened.
At bedtime, Mama made a little chart and stuck it on the wardrobe door, with a line for every week. In the first box she wrote: 2. "Not one by accident," she said. "Two, on purpose." She tucked Lina in. "Next week, maybe three. By the end of the year, who knows?" Lina looked at the chart in the glow of the night light. Two didn't sound like much. But it was double her old record. And she had done it by going slowly. She closed her eyes, still smiling, and fell asleep. The end.
