The balcony was Lina's garden. Over the summer she had filled it with pots: tomatoes, herbs, a lemon tree in a tub, two geraniums and a climbing jasmine. But now, with autumn coming, things had got out of hand. Dry leaves had collected in the corners, empty pots were stacked in a wobbly tower, the watering can had a split, seed packets had blown into the drain, and a bag of compost had torn and spilled across the tiles. Mama stepped out to call her in for bed and nearly slipped. "This," she said, "is a jungle."
