Baba had been growing a moonflower vine up the balcony railings for months, and now, at last, the first buds had appeared: long, white and tightly twisted, like rolled-up paper. Moonflowers, he explained, open at dusk and close again before dawn, and each flower lasts only one night. "If you want to see one open," he said, "you have to be there at exactly the right time. And you have to be patient, because it takes about half an hour." Lina was doubtful. Half an hour of watching a flower sounded like the most boring thing in the world.
