Counting Red Cars for Baba

Baba had phoned to say he was stuck in traffic and would be late. Majd had already had a bath, brushed his teeth and chosen a story, but there was no way he was going to sleep before Baba got home. He knelt on the armchair by the front window, watching the street. Every set of headlights made his heart jump, and every time it was someone else. "This is taking forever," he complained. "Why does waiting feel so long?"

Mama perched on the arm of the chair. "Because your brain has nothing to do except notice the waiting," she said. "Let's give it a job. We'll count red cars. If we reach twenty before Baba arrives, you can choose tomorrow's pudding." Majd considered this. Twenty was a lot. But it was better than staring at nothing.

The counting turned out to be surprisingly tricky. Was dark red allowed? What about orange? They made rules as they went: maroon counted, a red stripe did not, and a red fire engine was worth three. They saw a cherry-coloured taxi, a tiny red hatchback and a bus with a red roof that caused a long argument. Majd was so busy debating the bus that he completely forgot to check the clock.

They had reached seventeen when a familiar grey car swung into the drive and flashed its lights. "BABA!" Majd flew to the door. Baba laughed and swept him up, then carried him straight to bed. "Mama tells me you waited without a single tantrum," he said, tucking the duvet around him. "That's real patience." "It wasn't so bad," Majd admitted sleepily, "once I was busy." And with Baba beside him, he was asleep in minutes. The end.
