كان مَجْد يحبّ سيارة السباق الحمراء اللامعة ذات الخطّ الأبيض أكثر من أيّ لعبة. والليلة سيأتي سامي ابن خالته ليبيت عندهم. وما إن وصل مع الخالة حتّى رأى السيارة الحمراء: «واو! هل أجرّبها؟»
Majd loved his shiny red racing car with the white stripe more than any other toy. Tonight cousin Sami was coming to stay the night. As soon as he arrived with Auntie, he spotted the red car. "Wow! Can I have a go?" he asked.
فخبّأ مَجْد السيارة خلف ظهره وقال: «إنّها أفضل سيارةٍ عندي. ربّما لاحقاً.» فاختفت ابتسامة سامي، وجلس بهدوءٍ على السجّادة ينظر إلى يديه. وصارت الغرفة هادئةً جدّاً.
Majd held the car behind his back. "It's my best one," he said. "Maybe later." Sami's smile disappeared, and he sat quietly on the rug, looking at his hands. The room felt very quiet.
فنظر مَجْد إلى السيارة، ثمّ إلى ابن خالته الحزين، وجثا ببطء وقال: «هيّا نبني منحدراً ونتناوب. أنت أوّلاً.» فكدّسا الكتب ووسادة، وانطلقت السيارة الحمراء إلى الأسفل، فهتف الاثنان وضحكا.
Majd looked at the car, then at his sad cousin. Slowly, he knelt down. "Let's build a ramp and take turns," he said. "You go first." They piled up books and a cushion, and the red car zoomed down. They both cheered and laughed.
وبعد الحمّام، وضعت ماما ابنَي الخالة في سريرين متجاورين، والسيارة الحمراء متوقّفةٌ على الرفّ بينهما. همس سامي: «شكراً لأنّكَ شاركتني.» فقال مَجْد: «كان اللعب أجمل ونحن اثنان.» وبعد قليلٍ نام الاثنان. النهاية.
After bath time, Mama tucked the cousins into their beds, side by side, with the red car parked on the shelf between them. "Thank you for sharing," whispered Sami. "It was more fun with two," said Majd. Soon they were both asleep. The end.
