كانت الصغيرة لولو متضايقةً الليلة؛ أرضعتها ماما وغيّرت لها، لكنّها لم تهدأ. كانت لينا بثياب النوم تنتظر القصّة، لكنّ ماما بدت متعبةً جدّاً، فسألت: «هل هناك عملٌ أستطيع فعله؟»
Baby Lulu was grizzly tonight. Mama had fed her and changed her, but she still wouldn't settle. Lina was in pyjamas, ready for a story, but Mama looked very tired. "Is there a job I can do?" she asked.
فابتسمت ماما: «لولو تحبّ أن تُدفع في عربتها. هل تقودينها في الممرّ ذهاباً وإياباً؟ لكنّ لهذه السيارة قواعد خاصّة: إنّها أبطأ سيارةٍ في العالم، بلا تزمير ولا سباق.»
Mama smiled. "Lulu loves being pushed in her pram. Could you drive it up and down the hall? But this car has special rules: it's the slowest car in the world, with no honking and no racing."
فأمسكت لينا المقبض، ودحرجت العربة ببطءٍ شديدٍ إلى آخر الممرّ، واستدارت بلطف، ثمّ عادت. وكانت تدندن بهدوءٍ مثل محرّكٍ صامت، فتحوّل بكاء لولو إلى تنهيداتٍ صغيرة.
Lina gripped the handle. Ever so slowly, she rolled the pram to the end of the hall, did a gentle three-point turn, and rolled back. She hummed softly, like a quiet engine. Lulu's crying turned into little sighs.
وبعد الرحلة الخامسة غرقت لولو في النوم. فعانقتها ماما عناقاً هائلاً وهمست: «أنتِ أفضل سائقة في هذه العائلة»، ودثّرتها في السرير. فشعرت لينا بالفخر والنعاس، وغفت بعد قليل. النهاية.
After the fifth trip, Lulu was fast asleep. Mama gave Lina an enormous hug. "You're the best driver in this family," she whispered, and tucked her into bed. Lina felt proud and sleepy, and soon drifted off too. The end.
