بعد العشاء، رنّ الجرس، ودخل سامي ابن خالتها ومعه كيسٌ مليءٌ بسياراته. وكان عند لينا مرآبٌ رائعٌ من طابقين، فيه منحدرٌ ومصعد. سأل سامي: «هل تقف سياراتي في مرآبك؟»
After dinner, the doorbell rang, and in came cousin Sami with a bag full of his own toy cars. Lina had a wonderful toy garage with two floors, a ramp and a lift. "Can my cars park in your garage?" asked Sami.
فقالت لينا بسرعة: «لا، إنّه ممتلئ»، مع أنّه لم يكن ممتلئاً. وبقيت سيارات سامي في صفٍّ حزينٍ على السجّادة لا مكان لها، وأخذ سامي يحرّك واحدةً ذهاباً وإياباً بصمت.
"No, it's full," said Lina quickly, though it wasn't. Sami's cars sat in a sad little line on the rug, with nowhere to go. Sami pushed one slowly back and forth and didn't say anything.
وراقبته لينا لحظة؛ فاللعب وحيدةً في مرآبٍ كامل لم يكن ممتعاً. فقالت: «سياراتك تأخذ الطابق العلويّ، وسياراتي السفليّ، والمصعد للجميع.» فابتسم سامي ابتسامةً واسعة، وبعد قليلٍ صارت السيارات تصعد وتنزل معاً.
Lina watched him for a moment. Playing alone with a whole garage wasn't much fun after all. "Your cars can have the top floor," she said, "and mine can have the bottom. And the lift is for everyone." Sami grinned, and soon cars were zooming up and down together.
وحين حان وقت ذهاب سامي، قال: «كان هذا أجمل مرآب!» ثمّ دثّرها بابا وقال: «رأيتك تشاركين، وكان هذا لطفاً منك.» فابتسمت لينا؛ فالمرآب المزدحم أمتع بكثيرٍ من المرآب الفارغ. النهاية.
When it was time for Sami to go, he said, "That was the best garage ever." Baba tucked Lina into bed and said, "I saw you share. That was kind." Lina smiled. A busy garage was much more fun than an empty one. The end.
