في الليلة التي تسبق الحضانة، صفّت لينا سياراتها على أرض الغرفة، وقالت لبابا وهي تشير إلى وسادة: «هذه الحضانة، وهذه السيارة الصغيرة. إنّه يومها الأوّل وهي خائفة.» كانت السيارة الخضراء الصغيرة تختبئ خلف الزرقاء الكبيرة.
The night before nursery, Lina lined up her toy cars on the bedroom floor. "This is the nursery," she told Baba, pointing at a cushion. "And this is Little Car. It's the first day, and Little Car is scared." The tiny green car was hiding behind the big blue one.
سأل بابا: «ومن الزرقاء الكبيرة؟» قالت لينا: «إنّها أمّها، عليها أن تذهب إلى العمل.» فقاد بابا الأمّ مبتعداً ببطء: «بيب! إلى اللقاء يا صغيرتي، سأعود بعد وقت الوجبة.» فاهتزّت السيارة الصغيرة بحزنٍ قرب الوسادة.
"Who's the big blue one?" asked Baba. "That's Mummy Car. She has to go to work," said Lina. Baba drove Mummy Car slowly away. "Beep! Bye, Little Car! I'll be back after snack time." Little Car wobbled sadly by the cushion.
فصارت لينا المعلّمة، وأرت السيارة الصغيرة ركن المكعّبات وطاولة الرسم وصندوق الرمل المصنوع من جورب. فجرّبت الرسم، وصادقت حافلةً اسمها «باص». وبعد قليلٍ لم تعد تهتزّ أبداً، وقال بابا إنّها تبدو مستمتعةً جدّاً.
Lina became the teacher. She showed Little Car the block corner, the painting table and the sandpit made of a sock. Little Car tried painting and made a friend called Bus. Soon it wasn't wobbling at all, and Baba said it looked like it was having a lovely time.
ثمّ عادت الأمّ مسرعةً كما وعدت، فانطلقت السيارة الصغيرة لاستقبالها. فدثّرها بابا وقال: «غداً أنتِ السيارة الصغيرة، وسأعود كما عادت أمّها.» فأومأت لينا وهي تشعر بالاستعداد. النهاية.
Then Mummy Car came zooming back, just as she promised. Little Car raced to meet her. Baba tucked Lina into bed. "Tomorrow you're Little Car," he said, "and I'll come back just like Mummy Car did." Lina nodded, feeling ready. The end.
