قرأت ماما قصّةً عن الصحراء، ثمّ دثّرتها مع جُمجُم، جملها المحشوّ البنّيّ الناعم ذي السنام المترهّل، وقالت: «ليلة سعيدة لكما»، وأطفأت المصباح. فضمّت لينا جُمجُم، وبعد قليلٍ كانت تحلم برمالٍ ذهبيّةٍ تحت قمرٍ فضّيٍّ كبير.
Mama read a story about the desert, then tucked Lina in with Jumjum, her soft brown cuddly camel with the floppy hump. "Goodnight, you two," she said, and switched off the lamp. Lina snuggled Jumjum close, and soon she was dreaming of golden sand under a big silver moon.
في الحلم صار جُمجُم جملاً صغيراً حقيقيّاً، يمشي ببطءٍ بجانب لينا على الكثبان، لكنّ خطواته صارت أبطأ فأبطأ، وقال بصوتٍ مبحوح: «أنا عطشانٌ جدّاً. مشيت طريقاً طويلاً، ولم أجد ماءً.»
In the dream, Jumjum was a real baby camel, walking slowly beside Lina across the dunes. But his steps were getting slower and slower. "I'm so thirsty," he croaked. "I've walked such a long way, and I can't find any water."
فنظرت لينا حولها ورأت واحةً صغيرةً فيها نخيل، فقادت جُمجُم إليها خطوةً بعد خطوة تشجّعه طوال الطريق. وعند البركة جمعت لينا كفّيها وقدّمت له الرشفة الأولى، فشرب جُمجُم حتّى لمعت عيناه من جديد.
Lina looked around and spotted a little oasis with palm trees. She led Jumjum there, step by step, encouraging him all the way. At the pool, Lina cupped her hands and offered him the first sip. Jumjum drank and drank until his eyes were bright again.
وقال جُمجُم: «ساعدتِني حين كنت متعباً جدّاً لأساعد نفسي.» ثمّ ذاب الحلم في الظلام. وفي السرير الحقيقيّ ضمّت لينا الجمل المحشوّ أقوى قليلاً، وابتسمت في نومها، ونامت بسلامٍ حتّى الصباح. النهاية.
"You helped me when I was too tired to help myself," said Jumjum. Then the dream softened into darkness. In the real bed, Lina hugged the cuddly camel a little tighter, smiled in her sleep, and slept peacefully until morning. The end.
