كانت لينا تذهب إلى الحضانة منذ أسبوع، وكلّ يومٍ عند الباب تبكي وتتشبّث بماما. والليلة، وقت النوم، اختارت كتاباً عن عائلة عصافير. في الصورة الأولى ثلاثة عصافير صغيرةٍ في عشّ، وأمّها تفرد جناحيها وتطير بعيداً.
Lina had been going to nursery for a week, and every time at the door she cried and clung to Mama. Tonight at bedtime, she had chosen a book about a family of birds. In the first picture, three baby birds sat in a nest, and their mother spread her wings and flew away.
فزقزقت العصافير الصغيرة ورفرفت. وسألت لينا بقلق: «إلى أين تذهب؟» قالت ماما: «لنرَ»، وقلبت الصفحة. كانت ماما العصفورة تقفز في حقل، تجمع الديدان والبذور، والصغار ينتظرون في العشّ، يدفّئ بعضهم بعضاً.
The baby birds cheeped and flapped. "Where is she going?" Lina asked anxiously. "Let's see," said Mama, turning the page. Mama Bird was hopping across a field, finding worms and seeds. The baby birds waited in the nest, keeping each other warm.
وفي الصفحة الأخيرة عادت ماما العصفورة إلى العشّ ومنقارها مليء بالطعام، ففتح الصغار أفواههم واسعةً وأطعمتهم جميعاً. قالت لينا: «لقد عادت!» قالت ماما بهدوء: «أمّهات العصافير تعود دائماً. وأنا كذلك، في كلّ مرّة.»
On the last page, Mama Bird flew back to the nest, her beak full of food. The babies opened their mouths wide, and she fed every one. "She came back!" said Lina. "Mama birds always come back," said Mama softly. "And so do I. Every single time."
فاقتربت لينا أكثر وقالت: «غداً في الحضانة سأكون مثل العصافير الصغيرة: أنتظر وألعب، ثمّ تعودين.» قالت ماما: «سأعود»، ودثّرتها بقبلة، فنامت لينا وهي تفكّر في عشٍّ دافئ. النهاية.
Lina snuggled closer. "Tomorrow at nursery, I'll be like the baby birds," she said. "I'll wait, and play, and you'll come back." "I will," said Mama, and tucked her in with a kiss. Lina fell asleep thinking of a cosy nest. The end.
