The hamster had been Lina's birthday present, chosen after weeks of reading about how to look after one. She had named him Nibbles, set up his cage with tunnels and a wheel, and waited eagerly for the friendship to begin. But for three days, Nibbles had done nothing except sleep. Every time Lina rushed to the cage, there was only a mound of shredded paper, rising and falling slightly. "He's broken," Lina said on the third evening, close to tears. "Or he doesn't like it here."
