ولدت القطّة مشمش! أربع قططٍ صغيرةٍ تموء بصوتٍ رفيع، وعيونها ما زالت مغمضة. كانت في سلّةٍ في زاوية غرفة الجلوس، وجلس مَجْد بجانبها بثياب النوم يراقب. وكان بطن ماما يكبر أيضاً، فقريباً سيأتي طفلٌ جديدٌ إلى البيت.
Mishmish the cat had kittens! Four of them, tiny and squeaky, with their eyes still shut. They lay in a basket in the corner of the living room, and Majd sat beside it in his pyjamas, watching. Mama's tummy was getting big too. Soon there would be a new baby in the house.
قال مَجْد بهدوء: «ماما، حين يأتي الطفل، هل سيبقى عندك حبٌّ لي؟» فجلست ماما على الأرض بجانبه وقالت: «لنسأل مشمش. كم قطّةً صغيرةً عندها؟» قال مَجْد: «أربع.»
"Mama," Majd said quietly, "when the baby comes, will you have any love left for me?" Mama lowered herself onto the floor beside him. "Let's ask Mishmish," she said. "How many kittens does she have?" "Four," said Majd.
قالت ماما: «راقبها.» فلعقت مشمش القطّة الأولى، ثمّ الثانية، ثمّ الثالثة والرابعة، وخرخرت وتكوّرت حولها كلّها معاً. قالت ماما: «لم ينفد حبّها. الحبّ لا يُقسم مثل الكعكة، بل يكبر فقط.»
"Watch her," said Mama. Mishmish licked the first kitten, then the second, then the third and the fourth. She purred and curled round all of them at once. "She didn't run out," said Mama. "Love doesn't get shared out like cake. It just grows bigger."
فاتّكأ مَجْد على ماما وأحسّ بالطفل يركل ركلةً صغيرة، وقال: «إذن هناك ما يكفي الجميع.» قالت ماما: «كثيرٌ جدّاً.» ثمّ أخذته إلى السرير ودثّرته، فنام مَجْد على صوت الخرخرة. النهاية.
Majd leaned against Mama and felt the baby give a little kick. "Then there's enough for everyone," he said. "Lots and lots," said Mama. She carried Majd to bed and tucked him in, and Majd fell asleep to the sound of purring. The end.
