كان مَجْد بثياب النوم، ينتظر القصّة، حين سمع مواءً حزيناً صغيراً من المطبخ. كانت القطّة مشمش جالسةً قرب صحنها تحدّق فيه، وكان فارغاً تماماً؛ انشغل الجميع في ذلك المساء فنسوا عشاءها.
Majd was in pyjamas, ready for a story, when he heard a sad little "meow" from the kitchen. Mishmish the cat was sitting beside her bowl, staring at it. The bowl was completely empty. Everyone had been so busy that evening that they had forgotten her dinner.
فنادى مَجْد: «بابا! مشمش لم تتعشَّ!» فجاء بابا وقال: «يا حرام يا مشمش. هل تريد أن تطعمها؟ أنت المسؤول الليلة.» وأحضر كيس طعام القطط، وأراه كم يسكب: مغرفةٌ واحدةٌ فقط.
"Baba! Mishmish hasn't had dinner!" Majd called. Baba came in. "Oh dear, poor Mishmish. Would you like to feed her? You can be in charge tonight." He fetched the bag of cat food and showed Majd how much to pour: just one scoop.
فسكب مَجْد الطعام بعناية، ثمّ ملأ صحن الماء أيضاً من دون أن يسكب قطرة. وأكلت مشمش بشهيّة وذيلها يتمايل، وحين انتهت لحست شواربها وفركت رأسها بيد مَجْد وهي تخرخر بصوتٍ عالٍ.
Majd poured the food carefully, then filled her water bowl too, without spilling a drop. Mishmish ate hungrily, her tail swishing. When she finished, she licked her whiskers and rubbed her head against Majd's hand, purring loudly.
قال بابا وهو يدثّره: «إنّها تقول شكراً. لاحظت أنّها جائعةٌ حين نسينا جميعاً، وهذا لطفٌ كبير.» فقفزت مشمش وتكوّرت عند طرف السرير، فابتسم مَجْد ونام على صوت خرخرتها. النهاية.
"She's saying thank you," said Baba, tucking Majd into bed. "You noticed she was hungry when the rest of us forgot. That was very kind." Mishmish jumped up and curled at the end of the bed. Majd smiled and fell asleep to her purring. The end.
