كانت عند لينا مهارةٌ خاصّة: التلويحة الملكيّة، تعلّمتها من كتاب الأميرة: اليد مرفوعة، والأصابع مضمومة، ولفّةٌ بطيئةٌ للمعصم، كأميرةٍ في عربةٍ ذهبيّة. والليلة بعد الحمّام كانت تؤدّيها لماما، حين لاحظت لولو تراقب من فرشتها.
Lina had a special skill: the royal wave. She had learned it from her princess book: hand up, fingers together, and a slow twist of the wrist, like a princess in a golden coach. Tonight, after bath, she was doing it for Mama, when she noticed Lulu watching from her mat.
كانت عينا لولو مثبّتتين على يد لينا، ثمّ رفعت يدها الممتلئة وخفقت بها صعوداً ونزولاً كالعصفور، فضحكت لينا: «هذه ليست تلويحةً ملكيّة يا لولو، هذه تلويحة دجاجة!» فخفقت لولو أكثر مبتسمة. فقالت لينا: «هل أعلّمك؟»
Lulu's eyes were fixed on Lina's hand. Then she lifted her own chubby hand and flapped it wildly up and down, like a bird. Lina laughed. "That's not a royal wave, Lulu. That's a chicken wave." Lulu flapped harder, grinning. "Shall I teach you?" said Lina.
فجلست بجانب لولو ورفعت يدها الصغيرة برفق: «الأصابع مضمومة، ثمّ لفّة، ببطء.» وأدارت معصمها برفقٍ شديد، فعبست لولو من التركيز، ثمّ أفلتت لينا يدها، فلوّحت لولو وحدها: تلويحةً واحدةً بطيئةً مرتجفةً ملكيّةً تقريباً.
She sat down beside Lulu and gently held her little hand up. "Fingers together," she said, "and twist, slowly." She turned Lulu's wrist, very gently. Lulu frowned with concentration. Then Lina let go, and Lulu did it on her own: one wobbly, slow, almost-royal wave.
فقالت لينا: «فعلتها!» فهتفت ماما: «للعائلة الملكيّة عضوٌ جديد.» وفيما بعد دثّرتها وهمست: «كنتِ معلّمةً صبورةً جدّاً.» ومن سريرها خفقت لولو بيدٍ ناعسة، فلوّحت لينا لها ببطءٍ ملكيّ، ونامت. النهاية.
"She did it!" said Lina. Mama cheered. "The royal family has a new member," she said. Later, she tucked Lina in. "You were a very patient teacher," she whispered. From her cot, Lulu flapped one sleepy hand. Lina waved back, slowly and royally, and fell asleep. The end.
