قصة قبل النوم عن الذهاب إلى الحضانة للأطفال الذين يحبّون القمرَ والنجوم

في الليلة التي تسبق بدءه في حضانةٍ جديدة، لم يستطع مَجْد أن يرتاح: تقلّب يميناً ويساراً، ثمّ ركل اللحاف. وحين دخلت ماما قال: «الجميع هناك يعرفون بعضهم، وسأكون الجديد الوحيد.» فجلست ماما على السرير وسألت: «أتعرف ماذا يحدث حين ينضمّ رائد فضاءٍ جديدٌ إلى المحطّة؟» فهزّ مَجْد رأسه. «الآخرون هناك منذ شهور، يعرفون مكان كلّ شيء، والرائد الجديد يصل ولا يعرف أحداً، في مكانٍ غريبٍ بعيدٍ عن البيت.»

The night before starting at a new nursery, Majd couldn't get comfortable. He turned over, then back again, then kicked the duvet off. When Mama came in, he said, "Everyone there already knows each other. I'll be the only new one." Mama sat on the bed. "Do you know what happens when a new astronaut joins the space station?" she asked. Majd shook his head. "Everyone else has been up there for months. They know where everything is. And the new astronaut arrives knowing nobody, in a strange place, far from home."

سأل مَجْد: «وماذا يفعلون؟» قالت ماما: «للطاقم الموجود تقليد: حين تُفتح الكوّة يطفون نحو الرائد الجديد ويعانقونه، ويطوفون به في المكان، لأنّ كلّ واحدٍ منهم كان جديداً يوماً.» ومدّت يدها إلى جيبها وأخرجت شارةً مطرّزةً صغيرة: صاروخ، وحلقة نجوم، وبحروفٍ صغيرةٍ اسم مَجْد. وقالت: «لكلّ مهمّةٍ شارة، وهذه شارتك.» فقلّبها مَجْد بين أصابعه؛ كانت أجمل هديّةٍ تلقّاها قطّ.

"What do they do?" asked Majd. "The crew already on board has a tradition," said Mama. "When the hatch opens, they float over and hug the new astronaut, and show them around. Because every one of them was new once too." She reached into her pocket and brought out a small embroidered patch: a rocket, a ring of stars and, in tiny letters, Majd's name. "Every mission has a patch," she said. "This is yours." Majd turned it over in his fingers. It was the best thing he had ever been given.

وشرحت ماما أنّها ستخيطها على سترته كي يلمسها كلّما شعر بالتوتّر. ثمّ وضعا خطّة مهمّة كما يفعل الروّاد الحقيقيّون: الهدف الأوّل: أن يسلّم على المعلّمة. الهدف الثاني: أن يجد شخصاً يجلس بجانبه وقت الوجبة. الهدف الثالث: أن يعرف مكان الحمّام. وقالت ماما: «وإن حدثت أيّ مشكلة فتذكّر أنّ مركز التحكّم على بعد مكالمة، والمعلّمة تستطيع دائماً أن تتّصل بنا.» وردّد مَجْد الأهداف حتّى حفظها.

Mama explained that she'd sew it onto his jacket, so he could touch it whenever he felt nervous. Then they made a mission plan, the way real astronauts do. Objective one: say hello to the teacher. Objective two: find one person to sit next to at snack time. Objective three: learn where the toilets are. "And if there are any problems," said Mama, "remember that Mission Control is only a phone call away. The teacher can always ring us." Majd repeated the objectives until he knew them by heart.

ووضعت ماما الشارة على الطاولة بجانب المصباح ودثّرته وقالت: «وشيءٌ أخير: قريباً سيصل طفلٌ جديدٌ آخر، وستكون أنت من يعرف مكان كلّ شيء، فيأتي دورك لتطفو نحوه وتقول مرحباً.» فأعجبت الفكرة مَجْد، وتخيّل نفسه يطوف بغيره في المكان. ومدّ يده ولمس الصاروخ المطرّز الصغير مرّةً أخيرة، ثمّ أغمض عينيه ونام أخيراً. النهاية.

Mama put the patch on the bedside table, next to the lamp, and tucked the duvet around him. "One more thing," she said. "One day soon, another new child will arrive, and you'll be the one who already knows where everything is. Then it'll be your turn to float over and say hello." Majd liked that idea. He imagined himself showing someone else around, being the one who knew. He reached out and touched the little embroidered rocket one more time, then closed his eyes and, at last, fell asleep.
