قرأ بابا للينا قصّة أميرةٍ من الكتاب الأزرق الكبير، عن أميرةٍ تعيش في قصرٍ على تلّةٍ مثلجة. وحين أغلق الكتاب تكوّرت لينا وأغمضت عينيها، وسرعان ما حلمت، وفي الحلم كانت تمشي في حديقة القصر بعباءةٍ حمراء طويلة.
Baba read Lina a princess story from the big blue book, about a princess who lived in a palace on a snowy hill. When he closed the book, Lina snuggled down and closed her eyes. Soon she was dreaming, and in the dream she was walking through the palace garden, in a long red cloak.
كان الثلج يتساقط بهدوء، وتحت شجيرةٍ سمعت لينا زقزقةً دقيقة، فإذا عصفورٌ بنّيٌّ صغيرٌ منفوش الريش يرتجف: «لا أستطيع أن أدفأ.» فجثت لينا في الثلج، ومن غير تردّد خلعت العباءة الحمراء ولفّت بها العصفور.
Snow was falling softly. Under a bush, Lina heard a tiny cheep. It was a little brown bird, all puffed up and shivering. "I can't get warm," it said. Lina knelt down in the snow. She didn't think twice. She took off the red cloak and wrapped the bird in it.
قال العصفور: «لكنّك ستبردين الآن.» فقالت لينا: «لا يهمّني.» فتدفّأ العصفور في القماش الأحمر الناعم وبدأ يغنّي أغنيةً سعيدةً دافئة. والعجيب أنّ لينا لم تشعر بالبرد أبداً، بل شعرت بالدفء في كلّ جسمها.
"But now you'll be cold," said the bird. "I don't mind," said Lina. The bird snuggled into the soft red cloth and began to sing, a happy, warm little song. And the funny thing was, Lina didn't feel cold at all. She felt warm all the way through.
وفي السرير ابتسمت لينا في نومها، فرأى بابا الابتسامة وهو يطمئنّ عليها قبل أن ينام، فشدّ الغطاء حتّى ذقنها وهمس: «أحلاماً سعيدة.» وفي الحلم ظلّ العصفور يغنّي. النهاية.
In her bed, Lina smiled in her sleep. Baba, checking on her before he went to bed, saw the smile and pulled the blanket up to her chin. "Sweet dreams," he whispered. And in the dream, the little bird sang on. The end.
