In Lina's family, bath time ended the same way every night. Lina climbed out, Mama wrapped her in a towel, and then she knelt by the bath and fished out every toy one by one: the duck, the boat, the squirty octopus, the wind-up crab, and about a dozen little plastic fish. Tonight, Mama sat back on her heels and looked at Lina. "I've been thinking," she said. "You're old enough now to be in charge of the harbour."
