Getting baby Lulu into her pyjamas had become the hardest part of every evening. As soon as she saw them, she arched her back, kicked her legs and wailed as if Mama were trying to put her in a bath of ice. Tonight, Majd sat on the bed, already washed and changed, with his hands over his ears. "Lulu, please," said Mama, chasing a flailing arm. "It's just a sleeve." Majd watched for a moment, and then remembered something from the aquarium: how all the little children pressed their noses to the glass and went quiet, staring at the fish.
He slid off the bed and lay on the rug, right in front of Lulu's face. Then he sucked in his cheeks, made his eyes wide and round, and opened and closed his mouth very slowly. Bloop, blub, bloop. Lulu's crying stopped halfway, as if someone had pressed pause. She stared at Majd with wet, astonished eyes. Majd blubbed again, and added little fins, flapping his hands by his ears. Lulu's mouth twitched. Then she burst out laughing, a proper belly laugh, the kind that made Mama laugh too.
"Keep going," Mama whispered, and Majd did. He was a pufferfish, cheeks bulging. A goldfish, blowing pretend bubbles: pop, pip, pop. A grumpy grouper with a droopy face. A shark, creeping closer and closer, until Lulu squealed with delight. While Lulu was busy watching the whole sea swim past, Mama slipped one arm into a sleeve, then the other, and did up every popper. Lulu didn't even notice. "Finished," said Mama, sitting back on her heels. "That's the fastest it's ever been. Majd, you're a genius."
Mama laid Lulu in her cot, still hiccupping with giggles, and then tucked Majd into bed. "Every night I've been fighting those pyjamas," she said, "and all it needed was a fish." Majd grinned. "I've got more fish," he said. "Tomorrow I'll do an octopus." "She'll love it," said Mama, kissing his forehead. Across the room, Lulu made a small, sleepy blub of her own, copying. Majd blubbed back, very quietly. Then the room went still, two little fish in the dark, and they both fell asleep. The end.
