For a whole week, baby Yusuf had cried at bedtime. He was fine while Mama fed him and fine while Baba rocked him, but the moment the big light went off he started up, a thin, miserable wail that went on and on. "It's the dark," said Mama, tired, on the fourth night. "He's started to notice it. Babies do, at this age. It must look like a huge black room with nothing in it." Lina, lying in bed next door, listened to the crying and looked up at her own ceiling, where slow blue waves were rolling past.
