Majd was trying to get better at football, and he had a routine: twenty minutes of passing against the hall wall every evening after dinner, left foot and right foot. The problem was Lulu. She was one and a half, and she had just learned to walk, sort of. The moment the ball started thudding against the wall, she toddled straight into the middle of it, arms out, shrieking with excitement. Tonight she sat down on the ball and refused to move. "Mama!" Majd wailed. "She ruins everything! I can't practise with her here!"
