Waiting for Baba

Baba had promised. Tuesday evening, straight after work, the two of them would go to the park and practise free kicks before bed. Majd had been thinking about it all through dinner. But dinner finished, and Baba wasn't home. Then Majd brushed his teeth, and still no Baba. Mama checked her phone. "He's stuck in traffic," she said. "The roads are very busy tonight." Majd slumped against the front door. "Then it's too late for the park," he said. "It's already getting dark. Everything's ruined."

Mama sat down on the bottom stair. "It isn't ruined," she said. "It's changed. Those aren't the same thing." She thought for a moment. "Waiting is hard when you're just staring at a door. What if you used the time to get ready, so that whatever happens, you're prepared?" Majd looked up. "Prepared for what?" "Well," said Mama, "it's too dark for the park. But it isn't too dark for the hall." She grinned. "A free kick needs a wall, doesn't it?"

Together they built a free-kick wall out of sofa cushions, with three of Majd's teddies standing on top as defenders. Mama made a goal from the shoe rack and a laundry basket. Majd practised curling a soft foam ball round the side of the wall, again and again. By the time Baba's key finally turned in the lock, he could get it into the basket four times out of ten. Baba came in looking tired and sorry, but when he saw the hall, he started laughing. "Is this the national stadium?" he asked. "Your turn in goal," said Majd.

They played for ten minutes exactly, with Mama as referee. Majd scored twice past Baba, who dived dramatically onto the cushions and said the teddies had blocked his view. Then Mama blew an imaginary whistle. Bath, pyjamas, story. As she tucked him in, she said, "You turned a bad wait into a good game. That's a real skill." Baba put his head round the door. "Park on Thursday," he said. "Promise. And bring the teddies." Majd laughed and snuggled down. Waiting hadn't been fun, exactly. But it had been useful. And soon he was asleep. The end.
