A Flower for the Teacher

Majd was starting at a new nursery after the family's move, and the thought of walking into a room full of strangers made his stomach turn over. At dinner he barely ate. Afterwards, he found Mama in the garden of their new house, where she was trying to make sense of the overgrown flowerbeds the old owners had left. "I don't know anyone," Majd said quietly. "I won't know what to say." Mama put down her trowel and sat on the garden bench, patting the space beside her. Dusk was falling, and the air smelled of cut grass and lavender.

"When we moved in," said Mama, "I didn't know any of these plants. I didn't know which were weeds and which were flowers. So I've been learning them one at a time. This one's lavender. That's a hollyhock. Those little blue ones are forget-me-nots." She looked at Majd. "New people are like that too. You don't have to know everyone tomorrow. You just have to learn one name. Then another." Majd thought about it. One name sounded possible. "But how do I start?" he asked.

Mama got up and picked a small bunch of lavender, tying it with a bit of garden string. "Put this in your pocket," she said. "If you feel nervous, you can smell it, and remember this garden, and me. And if someone asks what it is, you can tell them. That's a conversation started." Majd held the lavender to his nose. It smelled calm and clean. "And the teacher?" "Ask her what her favourite flower is," said Mama. "Teachers love questions like that." Majd smiled for the first time all evening.

Inside, Mama put the lavender in a tiny paper bag and tucked it into the pocket of Majd's nursery jacket, hanging ready by the door. Then she ran his bath, and afterwards tucked him into bed. "One name tomorrow," she said. "That's all. One name, and one question about flowers." "One name," Majd repeated. He could still smell a trace of lavender on his fingers. He curled up, holding them close to his face, and thought about forget-me-nots and hollyhocks until he fell asleep. The end.
