Mama had been having a hard week. Teta was in hospital with a bad chest infection, and every day after work Mama went across town to visit her, then came home late, too tired to eat. Tonight she sat at the kitchen table with her coat still on, staring at nothing. Majd watched her from the doorway, feeling helpless. Then he remembered something Teta always said: that the smell of jasmine in the evening was the smell of home, of the house in Damascus where she grew up, and of her own mother's garden.
