The baby was due in three weeks, and the house was filling up with small things: tiny vests, a folded cot, a pack of nappies the size of a suitcase. This evening it was the turn of the car. Baba came in from the drive with a brand-new infant car seat and set it on the living-room floor to work out the straps. Majd watched from the sofa. "So that's going in the back," he said. "Next to me." It came out more grumpy than he meant.
