Majd and the Tow Truck Rescue

On Thursday evenings Grandpa always came for dinner, and afterwards he read Majd a chapter from the big book about famous racing cars. Tonight, though, when he settled into the armchair and opened the book, he patted his shirt pocket, then his trouser pockets, then the top of his head. "Well, this is a puzzle," he said. "My glasses have driven off without me."

Mama checked the kitchen, Baba checked the hall, and Grandpa looked rather sad. Without his glasses, the words were just grey smudges. Majd watched him for a moment. Grandpa had helped him so many times: fixing wheels, finding lost pieces, carrying him on his shoulders. Now it was his turn. He ran to the toy box and came back with his yellow tow truck, the one with the winding hook.

"Rescue truck reporting for duty," he announced. He lay flat on the rug and steered the truck under the sofa, into the dark, dusty space where nobody ever looked. The truck bumped into a lost crayon, then a button, then something smooth and cold. Majd lowered the hook, wound it in very slowly and pulled. Out came Grandpa's glasses, dangling from the hook.

Grandpa put them on and blinked happily. "Now I can see the most helpful driver in the whole city," he said. That evening he read two chapters instead of one, with the tow truck parked proudly on the arm of the chair. When Mama finally tucked Majd into bed, he was still smiling. Helping Grandpa, he thought, had felt even better than winning a race. The end.
