Every year, on the evening before Mother's Day, Lina and Baba made Mama a flower arrangement from the garden, and every year it was a surprise. This year Lina had planned it carefully: white roses from the bush by the gate, sprigs of lavender, and three tall irises that had flowered just in time. Cousin Sami was staying over, and while they cut the flowers by torchlight, Lina noticed him going quiet. "My mum's in hospital," he said eventually. "She's coming home on Sunday. But I haven't got anything for her."

Lina looked at the flowers in the basket. There were enough for one beautiful arrangement, or two smaller ones. She felt a pull of disappointment; she had imagined Mama's face when she saw the big one. But she also thought about Sami's mum in hospital, and about how it would feel to have nothing to give. "We can make two," Lina said. "One for each of our mums." Sami looked up, surprised. "But they're your flowers." "They're the garden's flowers," said Lina. "And there's enough."

Back in the kitchen, Baba found two jam jars and some ribbon. Lina showed Sami how to strip the lower leaves off each stem, and how to put the tallest flowers in the middle and the shorter ones round the edge. Sami chose the white roses for his mum, because she liked white best, and Lina let him have two of the three irises. They tied ribbon round the jars and wrote little labels. Sami's said: Welcome home, Mum. The two jars stood side by side, smaller than Lina had planned, but somehow twice as lovely.

Baba put Sami's jar in the fridge to keep it fresh until Sunday and hid Mama's in the shed. Then he sent both children up to bed. As he tucked Lina in, he said quietly, "That was generous. I know you'd planned it differently." Lina shrugged. "Mama will still love it. And Sami's mum will have something when she gets home." Across the room, Sami was already asleep, a faint smell of lavender still on his fingers. Lina smiled into her pillow and soon followed him into sleep. The end.
