Lina had spent the evening reading a library book about rock pools with Mama. The best page was about hermit crabs. Mama read it twice. Hermit crabs don't grow their own shells, she explained. They borrow empty ones. And when they grow too big, they have to go looking for a new home, which is dangerous, because for a little while they have no shell at all. "That's sad," said Lina. "What if they can't find one?" "Sometimes kind people leave empty shells on the beach for them," said Mama, closing the book. That night, Lina dreamed.
