قصة قبل النوم للبنات عن الذهاب إلى الحضانة، لكلّ بنتٍ تحبّ الديناصورات

بعد العشاء، دخل بابا وهو يخبّئ شيئاً خلف ظهره، وقال: «أغمضي عينيك.» وحين فتحتهما لينا، رأت حقيبة ظهرٍ جديدةً خضراء، عليها ديناصورٌ مبتسمٌ وأشواكٌ من القماش على طول أعلاها. قال بابا: «هذه لغد، لأوّل يومٍ لك في الحضانة.» فمرّرت لينا أصابعها على الأشواك الناعمة. كانت أجمل حقيبةٍ رأتها، فلماذا يرفرف بطنها ويضيق هكذا؟

After dinner, Baba came in holding something behind his back. "Close your eyes," he said. When Lina opened them, there was a new backpack, green with a smiling stegosaurus on the front and spikes sewn along the top. "For tomorrow," said Baba. "Your first day at nursery." Lina ran her fingers along the soft spikes. It was the best bag she had ever seen, so why did her tummy feel so fluttery and tight?

جلسا على السجّادة وجهّزاها معاً. قرأ بابا من القائمة التي أرسلتها الحضانة: قارورة ماءٍ عليها اسم لينا، وثياباً إضافيّة، وقبّعةً للّعب في الحديقة، وشرائح تفّاحٍ للوجبة الخفيفة. ووضعت لينا كلّ شيءٍ ببطء. وحين امتلأت الحقيبة، قالت بصوتٍ صغيرٍ جدّاً: «بابا، ماذا لو بكيت حين تذهب، ورآني الجميع؟»

They sat on the rug and packed it together. Baba read from the list the nursery had sent: a water bottle with Lina's name on it, a spare set of clothes, a sun hat for the garden, a snack of apple slices. Lina put each thing in slowly. When the bag was full, she said in a very small voice, "Baba, what if I cry when you leave, and everyone sees?"

لم يقل بابا «لا تكن سخيفاً»، بل قال: «إذن تبكين قليلاً، ولا بأس في ذلك. في أوّل يومٍ لي في عملٍ جديد، كانت يداي ترتجفان.» فحدّقت لينا فيه: بابا كان خائفاً؟ وتابع بابا: «ما ساعدني أنّني عرفت تماماً ماذا سيحدث. فهيّا نضع خطّة.» واخترعا معاً «وداع الديناصور»: عناقٌ كبير، وتلويحةٌ من النافذة، ثمّ إلى اللعب.

Baba didn't say "Don't be silly." He said, "Then you cry a little, and that's all right. On my first day at a new job, my hands were shaking." Lina stared at him. Baba, scared? "What helped me," Baba went on, "was knowing exactly what would happen. So let's make a plan." Together they invented the Dinosaur Goodbye: one big hug, one stegosaurus wave at the window, and then off to play.

وتدرّبا عليه هناك في الغرفة: تظاهر بابا بأنّه باب الحضانة، وعانقته لينا عناقاً ضخماً، ثمّ لوّحت تلويحة ديناصورٍ بطيئةً مسرحيّة، حتّى ضحك الاثنان. وقال بابا: «وبعد وقت الحكاية، سأكون واقفاً عند البوّابة، وتحكين لي كلّ شيء، كلّ يوم.» فهزّت لينا رأسها؛ فقد جعلت الخطّة الرفرفة أصغر.

They practised it right there in the bedroom. Baba pretended to be the nursery door, and Lina gave him a huge hug and a slow, dramatic stegosaurus wave, until they were both laughing. "And then," said Baba, "after story time, I'll be standing at the gate, and you can tell me all about it. Every single day." Lina nodded. Having a plan made the fluttery feeling smaller.

وانتظرت الحقيبة عند باب البيت، وديناصورها يبتسم في ضوء الممرّ. ودثّرها بابا وأطفأ المصباح. وهمست لينا لنفسها مرّةً بعد مرّة، مثل أغنية نوم: «عناق، تلويحة، لعب، بابا يعود.» كانت الكلمات ثابتةً آمنة، مثل الإمساك بيد بابا. وقبل أن تدري، انغلقت عيناها، والغد ينتظر، أقلّ إخافةً من قبل. النهاية.

The backpack waited by the front door, its stegosaurus smiling in the hall light. Baba tucked Lina into bed and switched off the lamp. "Hug, wave, play, Baba comes back," Lina whispered to herself, over and over, like a lullaby. The words felt solid and safe, like holding Baba's hand. Before she knew it, her eyes had closed, and tomorrow was waiting, a little less scary than before. The end.
