Majd and the Iftar Dates

It was the second week of Ramadan, and the evenings had a special feeling. Mama and Baba had been fasting since before dawn, and Teta had come to stay for the whole month. As the sky outside turned from gold to orange, the kitchen filled with good smells: lentil soup, warm bread and the sweet, sticky smell of dates. "Twenty minutes until iftar," Baba announced, rubbing his tummy.

Majd was too young to fast all day, but he wanted to be part of it. "What can I do?" he asked. Mama gave him the most important job: the dates. Majd washed his hands, arranged the dates in a circle on the blue plate, and carried it to the table with both hands, as slowly as a snail. Then he filled a glass of water for every person, so nobody would have to wait to drink.

Then came the hardest part: waiting. Baba's tummy rumbled, which made everyone giggle. Majd watched the clock and listened. At last, the call to prayer rose from the mosque down the street, clear and gentle in the evening air. Majd picked up the plate. "Teta first," he said, because Teta was the oldest. Teta chose a date, said a quiet prayer, and squeezed his hand.

After iftar, Baba ran Majd a warm bath, and Mama tucked him into bed under the blanket with the little crescent moons. Teta came to the door. "Do you know," she said, "when you help a fasting person break their fast, you share in their reward." Majd snuggled down, feeling warm inside. Tomorrow evening, he decided, he would set out the soup spoons too. The end.
