Children's sleep in Ramadan: keeping their routine around iftar and suhoor
Ramadan changes the whole household's timing
Evenings run late, there are more visits, and grown-ups sleep and wake at different times. Young children still need the same amount of sleep, though, and nursery or school usually still starts in the morning. So it helps to keep their bedtime close to normal where you can.
A short routine after iftar
A little while after iftar, start the usual routine, even a shorter one: brushing teeth, pyjamas and a short story. The story can be about Ramadan itself, like getting the dates ready for iftar or hanging the lantern, so your child feels part of the month, not left out of it.
On nights with visits and late evenings, staying up later sometimes is fine, but keep it the exception and make up for it with a nap or an earlier night the next day.
Practice fasting for older children
Children are not required to fast, but many families like to introduce older children gradually, for example fasting part of the day. If you do, don't let it cost them sleep, and check with your paediatrician if your child has any health condition.
Make Ramadan a happy memory
Children remember the feeling more than the details: the lanterns, the smell of food before maghrib, taking food to the neighbours, a dua before sleep. A calm story each night about these moments links the month in their mind with warmth and closeness.
