Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He made us die (sleep), and to Him is the return.

Bedtime duas for kids: easy Islamic prayers before sleep

Why teach a bedtime dua?

A short dua every night means the last thing your child hears before closing their eyes is calm, familiar words. It links sleep with peace and remembering Allah, and with repetition your child learns it alone, as part of the routine like brushing teeth and the story.

Start with one dua

Children aged 2 to 3 learn a short phrase easily when they hear it every night in the same voice. Start with the short bedtime dua at the top of the page ("Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya") only, and say it together after the story while they are in bed. Once they know it, add the waking-up dua in the morning.

From 4 to 8, they can learn the meaning simply: "We sleep in Allah's name, and we wake in Allah's name." There is no need for a long explanation at this time of night; calm matters more than the lesson.

Make it a lovely moment, not a chore

Say the dua softly, holding their hand, or raise your hands together. If they forget or are tired, don't scold; say it yourself while they listen. The last step on the bedtime routine chart can be a star for the bedtime dua.

From the Sunnah before sleep

The Prophet, peace be upon him, slept on his right side and before sleeping recited Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, then blew lightly into his palms and wiped them over as much of his body as he could, three times. The virtue of reciting Ayat al-Kursi before sleep is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. You can recite them over your child until they learn the short surahs.
