كانت آخر ليلةٍ من رمضان، والجميع يستعدّون للعيد. علّقت ماما ثياب مَجْد الجديدة على باب الخزانة، ووضع بابا تحتها حذاءه الجديد اللامع، فردةً بجانب فردة. ومن النافذة سُمعت أصواتٌ فرحةٌ تنادي: «عيد مبارك!»
It was the last night of Ramadan, and everyone was getting ready for Eid. Mama hung Majd's new clothes on the wardrobe door, and Baba put his shiny new shoes underneath, side by side. From the window they could hear people calling out happily: "Eid Mubarak!"
ووضعته ماما في السرير، لكنّ عينيه لم تبقيا مغمضتين، فظلّ يختلس النظر إلى الثياب الجديدة ويسأل: «كم ساعةً بقيت للعيد؟ لا أستطيع النوم، بطني مليءٌ بفقاعاتٍ تفور!» فضحك بابا وجلس على طرف السرير.
Mama tucked Majd into bed, but his eyes would not stay shut. He kept peeking at the new clothes. "How many hours until Eid?" he asked. "I can't sleep. My tummy is full of fizzy bubbles!" Baba laughed and sat on the edge of the bed.
وقال: «هيّا نلعب لعبة العيد: أخبرني بشيءٍ تنتظره.» ففكّر مَجْد: «أن أعانق تيتا، وآكل المعمول، وألبس حذائي الجديد.» ومع كلّ شيء، صار صوته أبطأ وأهدأ، وجفناه أثقل.
"Let's play the Eid game," he said. "Tell me one thing you are looking forward to." Majd thought. "Hugging Teta. Eating ma'amoul. Wearing my new shoes." With each one, his voice got slower and softer, and his eyelids got heavier.
فأطفأ بابا المصباح وقبّله على جبينه وهمس: «النوم أسرع طريقٍ إلى العيد.» وبعد قليل غرق مَجْد في النوم مبتسماً، وثيابه الجديدة تنتظر على الباب. عيد مبارك يا مَجْد. النهاية.
Baba switched off the lamp and kissed his forehead. "Sleep is the quickest way to Eid," he whispered. Soon Majd was fast asleep, smiling, with his new clothes waiting on the door. Eid Mubarak, Majd. The end.
