كانت عشيّة اليوم الوطني، عيد ميلاد الإمارات. في كلّ شرفةٍ في شارع مَجْد علم، لكنّ شرفة بيته كانت ما تزال فارغة. فسألت ماما: «هل نصنع علمنا بأنفسنا؟» ووضعت على الطاولة ورقاً أحمر وأخضر وأبيض وأسود، وصمغاً، وعوداً ورقيّاً طويلاً.
It was the evening before National Day, the birthday of the UAE. Every balcony on Majd's street had a flag, but his own balcony was still bare. "Shall we make our own?" asked Mama. She laid out red, green, white and black paper, a glue stick and a long paper straw.
وأرته ماما صورةً وقالت: «الشريط الأحمر يقف مستقيماً على الجانب، ثمّ الأخضر في الأعلى، والأبيض في الوسط، والأسود في الأسفل.» فضغط مَجْد كلّ شريطٍ بحذر، وملّس الانتفاخات بإبهامه.
Mama showed him a picture. "The red stripe stands up straight at the side," she said. "Then green at the top, white in the middle and black at the bottom." Majd pressed each stripe down carefully and smoothed out the bumps with his thumb.
وحين جفّ الصمغ، ثبّت بابا العلم على العود. فحمله مَجْد إلى الشرفة ولوّح به عالياً. وفي الجهة المقابلة، كانت المباني العالية تضيء بالأحمر والأخضر والأبيض والأسود، ولوّح جارٌ بعلمه أيضاً، وتنادوا: «كلّ عامٍ والإمارات بخير!»
When the glue was dry, Baba taped the flag to the straw. Majd carried it out to the balcony and waved it high. Across the street, the tall buildings glowed red, green, white and black, and a neighbour waved a flag back. "Happy National Day!" they called to each other.
ثمّ جاء وقت الحمّام والبيجامة. ووضعته ماما في السرير، ووقف العلم الصغير في كوبٍ على الرفّ. وهمس بابا: «بيتنا جاهزٌ لعيد ميلاد الإمارات.» فابتسم مَجْد وأغمض عينيه. النهاية.
Then it was bath time and pyjamas. Mama tucked Majd into bed, and the little flag stood in a cup on the shelf. "Our home is ready for the UAE's birthday," whispered Baba. Majd smiled and closed his eyes. The end.
