Lina's Ramadan Lantern

After iftar one Ramadan evening, Baba cleared the table and laid out coloured paper, a glue stick, scissors with round ends and a small battery light. "Every house on our street has a lantern in the window," he said. "Shall we make our own?" Lina clapped her hands.

Baba cut the shapes, and Lina did the sticking: a big yellow crescent moon, a row of stars, and little windows of red and blue paper. "The glue needs a few minutes to dry," said Baba. Lina wanted to hold it right away, but she sat on her hands and counted slowly to fifty instead.

At last the glue was dry. Baba rolled the paper into a lantern and put the little light inside. Lina pressed the button. Click! Red and blue squares danced on the ceiling, and the yellow moon glowed. They hung the lantern in the window, next to the dark street.

Mama gave Lina a bath and tucked her into bed, and Baba left the lantern glowing. "Now everyone who walks past will see a bit of Ramadan light," he said. Lina watched the coloured squares on the ceiling until her eyes closed. The end.
