Every Ramadan, the houses on Lina's street hung lanterns in their windows, and after iftar she liked to count them from the balcony: seven, eight, nine. But her own window was dark. "Our old lantern broke when we moved," Baba explained. Then he winked. "So tonight we'll make a new one, the best one on the street." He laid out coloured card, tissue paper, a glue stick and a little battery light on the cleared table.
