في مساء اليوم الوطني، كانت المدينة كلّها ترتدي أربعة ألوان. ومن نافذة غرفة الجلوس رأت لينا الأبراج تضيء بالأحمر والأخضر والأبيض والأسود، والأعلام ترفرف على كلّ شرفة. فسألت للمرّة الثالثة: «بابا، متى تبدأ الألعاب الناريّة؟»
On National Day evening, the whole city was dressed in four colours. From the living room window, Lina could see the towers glowing red, green, white and black, and flags fluttering on every balcony. "Baba, when do the fireworks start?" she asked for the third time.
قال بابا: «في الساعة التاسعة، والانتظار طويل. فلنستعدّ للنوم أوّلاً، ثمّ نشاهدها من نافذة غرفتك.» وأرادت لينا أن تبقى عند الزجاج، لكنّها أخذت نفساً عميقاً وذهبت إلى الحمّام، ثمّ نظّفت أسنانها ولبست البيجامة وحدها.
"At nine o'clock," said Baba, "and that is a long wait. So let's get ready for bed first, and then we'll watch from your window." Lina wanted to stay by the glass, but she took a deep breath and went to the bath. Then she brushed her teeth and put on her pyjamas all by herself.
وأخيراً أطفأ بابا المصباح وفتح الستائر. وبعيداً فوق البحر سُمع صوتٌ خافت، وتفتّحت في السماء زهرةٌ كبيرةٌ حمراء من النور، ثمّ خضراء، ثمّ بيضاء تلمع كالسكّر. فهمست لينا: «كأنّ الإمارات تحتفل بعيد ميلادها!» فقال بابا: «هذا صحيح.»
At last Baba switched off the lamp and opened the curtains. Far away over the sea, there was a soft pop, and a big red flower of light opened in the sky. Then came a green one, then a white one that sparkled like sugar. "It's like the UAE is having a birthday party!" whispered Lina. "It is," said Baba.
وحين انطفأت آخر الشرارات، جاءت ماما لتغطّيها وقبّلت جبينها وقالت: «كان صبرك جميلاً.» وكانت الأبراج ما تزال تضيء بهدوءٍ في الخارج. وأغمضت لينا عينيها فرأت أزهار النور من جديد، حمراء وخضراء وبيضاء، حتّى نامت. النهاية.
When the last sparkles faded, Mama came to tuck Lina in. "You waited so patiently," she said, and kissed her forehead. The towers were still glowing softly outside. Lina closed her eyes and saw the light flowers again, red and green and white, until she fell asleep. The end.
