Majd and the Night Before Eid

It was the very last night of Ramadan. Earlier, the whole family had stood on the balcony looking for the thin new moon, and when Baba finally spotted it, everyone cheered. Now the house was busy with Eid preparations. Mama ironed Majd's new clothes and hung them on the wardrobe door. Baba polished the new shoes until they shone. From the mosque, the Eid takbeer floated through the open window, rising and falling like a gentle song.

After a warm bath, Mama tucked Majd into bed. But sleep was nowhere to be found. His legs kicked under the blanket, his eyes kept opening to check the clothes, and his mind raced with Eid plans: the prayer, the visits, the sweets, the Eid money from Teta. "I'll never fall asleep," he groaned. "Eid is taking forever!"

Baba came in and sat beside him. "When I was your age, I couldn't sleep either," he said. "So my mother taught me a trick. Breathe in slowly, like smelling a flower. Breathe out slowly, like blowing on hot tea. And each time you breathe out, think of one thing you're thankful for." Majd tried it. In, out: Mama. In, out: Teta. In, out: the new moon. In, out: the whole month of Ramadan.

Somewhere around the fifth thankful thing, Majd's breathing became slow and deep. Baba smiled, switched off the lamp and kissed his forehead. The takbeer drifted softly through the window, a few lanterns still glowed along the street, the new clothes waited on the door, and Majd slept peacefully, dreaming of new shoes and sweet ma'amoul. Eid Mubarak, Majd. The end.
