قصة قبل النوم للبنات عن العيد

في كلّ عام، في المساء الذي يسبق العيد، كانت تيتا تصنع المعمول، فيتحوّل المطبخ إلى مخبزٍ صغير. وفي هذا العام كبرت لينا وسامي بما يكفي للمساعدة. ربطت تيتا مريلةً على كلٍّ منهما، ورتّبت الأوعية: عجين السميد الطريّ، وعجينة التمر اللزجة، والفستق المجروش، وقالت: «المعمول يُصنع بالصبر ويُقدَّم بالمحبّة، هذا هو السرّ.»

Every year, on the evening before Eid, Teta made ma'amoul, and every year the kitchen turned into a little bakery. This year Lina and cousin Sami were finally old enough to help. Teta tied aprons around them both and set out the bowls: soft semolina dough, sticky date paste, and chopped pistachios. "Ma'amoul is made with patience and shared with love," she said. "That's the secret recipe."

كوّر الطفلان العجين كرات، وصنعا في كلّ كرةٍ حفرةً بالإبهام للحشوة. ثمّ فتحت تيتا صندوقها الخاصّ وأخرجت قالب أمّها الخشبيّ القديم، المنقوش بوردة، والأملس من طول الاستعمال. ولم يكن هناك إلّا قالبٌ واحد. فأمسك به الاثنان، وشدّاه ذهاباً وإياباً لحظة. قال سامي: «أنا طلبته أوّلاً!» فقالت لينا: «لكنّني أنا المساعدة!»

The children rolled the dough into balls and pressed a thumb-hole in each one for the filling. Then Teta opened her special box and lifted out her mother's old wooden mould, carved with a flower pattern and smooth from years of use. There was only one. Lina and Sami both grabbed for it, and for a moment they tugged it back and forth. "I asked first!" said Sami. "But I'm the one who's helping!" said Lina.

ولم تقل تيتا شيئاً؛ بل انتظرت وهي تكوّر كرةً أخرى. فنظرت لينا إلى القالب، ثمّ إلى وجه سامي الغاضب، وتذكّرت السرّ، فأفلتت القالب وقالت: «لنكن فريقاً: أنت تحشو وأنا أضغط، ثمّ نتبادل.» ونجحت الفكرة نجاحاً جميلاً: حشا سامي التمر، وضغطت لينا القالب ونقرته على الطاولة، فسقطت منه وردةٌ صغيرةٌ كاملة. وبعد عشر كعكاتٍ تبادلا العمل، يضحكان من الأشكال الطريفة التي صنعاها.

Teta said nothing; she just waited, rolling another ball. Lina looked at the mould, then at Sami's cross face, and remembered the secret recipe. She let go. "Let's make a team," she said. "You fill, I press. Then we swap." It worked beautifully. Sami packed the dates in, Lina pressed and tapped the mould on the table, and out dropped a perfect little flower. After ten, they swapped jobs, laughing at the funny shapes they made.

وحين خرجت آخر صينيّةٍ من الفرن، كان المطبخ يفوح بالزبدة والتمر، ورشّت تيتا السكّر الناعم على كلّ شيءٍ كالثلج. ثمّ حمّمتها ماما ووضعتها في السرير، وقالت تيتا وهي تقبّلها: «غداً سيأكل كلّ الزوّار كعكاً صنعه فريق.» فنامت لينا وهي تفكّر أنّ المشاركة هي السرّ حقّاً. النهاية.

By the time the last tray came out of the oven, the kitchen smelled of butter and dates, and Teta dusted everything with powdered sugar like snow. Mama gave Lina a bath and tucked her into bed. "Tomorrow everyone who visits will eat biscuits made by a team," Teta said, kissing her goodnight. Lina fell asleep thinking that sharing really was the secret recipe. The end.
