It was the evening before National Day, and the whole city seemed to be dressing up. From the balcony, Majd counted the flags hanging from the buildings: twelve, thirteen, fourteen. Baba explained that on the second of December, many years ago, the emirates joined hands and became one country, the United Arab Emirates. "So tomorrow is the UAE's birthday," said Majd. "And our balcony doesn't have a single flag!"
