قصة الليلة للبنات

بعد أن أطفأ بابا النور غفت لينا وهي تنظر إلى النجوم المضيئة على سقف غرفتها. ثمّ بدأ الحلم: كانت لينا واقفةً في حقل، وعلى العشب شيءٌ صغيرٌ فضّيٌّ يومض بضعف. كانت نجمةً صغيرة، وكانت تبكي.

After Baba switched off the light, Lina fell asleep looking at the glow-in-the-dark stars on her ceiling. And then she was dreaming. In the dream, she was standing in a field, and something small and silvery was lying in the grass, flickering weakly. It was a baby star, and it was crying.

قالت النجمة وهي تشهق: «كنت ألعب قريباً جدّاً من حافّة السماء فانزلقت، والآن أنا بعيدةٌ جدّاً ولا أستطيع أن ألمع جيّداً، وعائلتي ستقلق.» فجثت لينا وحملت النجمة، فكانت دافئةً مثل كوب كاكاو.

"I was playing too close to the edge of the sky," sniffed the star, "and I slipped. Now I'm too far away to shine properly, and my family will be worried." Lina knelt down and picked up the star. It felt warm, like a cup of cocoa.

قالت لينا: «سأعيدك.» وكان في الحلم سلّمٌ فضّيٌّ طويلٌ مسنودٌ إلى الليل، فصعدته درجةً بعد درجة، وهي تضمّ النجمة. وكلّما ارتفعت ازداد ضوء النجمة الصغيرة، حتّى صارت تلمع مثل مصباحٍ صغير.

"I'll take you back," said Lina. In the dream there was a long silver ladder leaning against the night. She climbed it, step by step, holding the star close. The higher she went, the brighter the little star glowed, until it was shining like a tiny lamp.

وفي الأعلى كانت مئات النجوم تنتظر، فتلألأت فرحاً حين قفزت النجمة الصغيرة إلى مكانها، وغنّت: «شكراً لك.» فابتسمت لينا في نومها. وحين أطلّ بابا لاحقاً كانت متكوّرةً في السرير، وبدت نجمةٌ بلاستيكيّةٌ على السقف تلمع أكثر قليلاً. النهاية.

At the top, hundreds of stars were waiting. They twinkled with joy as the little star hopped back into its place. "Thank you," they sang. Lina smiled in her sleep. When Baba peeped in later, she was curled up tight, and on the ceiling, one plastic star seemed to glow a little brighter. The end.
